inside Pazzo Palazzo... A lot of Laughter, some shouting and a few tears
but thats life.....

Note that I sold this house on the
31st Jan 2005 but it was such a big part of my life for so long that I cant bear
to part with the story of it. I now live in the Love Shack (which is the
house behind ) click here to check out the Love
Shack

Pazzo Palazzo is
an 10 bedroom house in Bungalow, a suburb of Cairns and is 1.5 km from the centre
of Cairns making it ideally placed to cycle or walk (if you're keen !) into
town. (Or conversely, stagger home if you've had too many drinks and cant
find/afford a cab!) The area in which it sits is zoned 'General Industry'.
Basically the house is on the edge of the residential area where it starts to
become more industrial the further away from the city you get. I bought inside
this zoning so that I could pursue my interest in creating furniture and
"stuff" from recycled timber. (Visit the "my furniture" page). So the
area can be a little noisy at times during the day but at night and on weekends
it is usually pretty quiet, except perhaps for the sometimes rowdy occupants,
who, like me, like to be able to HEAR their music....
The History of the house is that it was built circa 1950 by an italian family,
and I suspect that 'Mama' was of short stature as I have to bend over when doing
the dishes...
From around 1989 to 1999 it was leased by the previous owners to Correctional
Services who used the building as a halfway house for prisoners after their
release. I think that during this time very little maintenance was carried out
on the place, which may have been one of the reasons that Correctional Services
are not still there. The house was co-owned by 4 parties and as the years went
by they drifted away to other cities and countries leaving one party in Cairns
to 'manage' it. For a while after Correctional Services left the top and
bottom floors were rented separately (as there are separate bathrooms, kitchens
etc (effectively 2X5 bedroom houses.) This, I gather was not very successful and
the 'manager' let the place run down even further to a point where some tenants
left and others no longer paid rent and became squatters. When I looked at it first it was very
messy and had a strange odour. The people living there were dressed like ferals and the electricity had long ago been cut off. (After buying the place and
tidying up I found a lot of used syringes so maybe they were Diabetics.......). Just about every door in the place had been kicked in and
damaged and at least half the windows downstairs were broken. The walls
downstairs had had posters GLUED onto the walls and were very tasteful images of
scantily clad, large breasted women draped over Harley Davidson motorcycles. I
had to use a belt sander to remove those but that's another story...
I took legal possession on the 24th August 2001. I owned the house until
January 2005 when I sold it on the Chris Thompson who has since finished off the
upstairs and done all the things that it was not in my power to do, mainly coz I
had run out of money
